One project. One mission. One real challenge. Discover how OSIRIS is rethinking the future of space debris.
OSIRIS is a student team founded in 2025 at Politecnico di Torino, bringing together over fifty members with backgrounds in aerospace, mechanical, electronic, and computer engineering. It combines technical rigor with ambitious design, driven by a clear goal: to develop a real mission for a real problem.
Space debris is one of the most pressing challenges of the space age. It threatens critical orbital infrastructure, generates systemic costs in the billions, and—driven by the rise of megaconstellations—risks triggering irreversible collision cascades.
OSIRIS explores the feasibility of an orbital system to recover and relocate space debris to cislunar orbit. The goal is not only removal, but valorization—turning an environmental and operational liability into a strategic resource for future lunar infrastructure.
The Moon represents a natural logistical hub for the emerging space economy. Redirecting debris to the cislunar environment avoids atmospheric re-entry and its impact on the stratosphere, while positioning already space-qualified materials where they will be needed.
